A smart home

Have you realized that recently INTERNET CONNECTION looks more important at home than water. First thing that children ask when going to visit a friend is a WiFi password.

There is no more questioning IF all in our life will become digital, it’s sure that is will. The question is WHEN and HOW.

Smart technologies are meant to do our life more comfortable and easier and the digitalization is already an inherent part of home building. A lot of features can become smart and can be controlled from your phone or with your voice. Home automation systems are becoming more and more complete and easier to use.

Some example of smart features that our houses have are:

  • Remote clima control
  • Wellness: program temperature and light scenes in pool, jacuzzi or saunas
  • Cinema: automatically turn on projector and create lights scenery.
  • Blinds and shutters, programmed with timer or light detector
  • Lighting: on/off, movement sensors, dimmers or creating scenes (dinner, movie, romantic)
  • Garden irrigation
  • Doors and gates opening and video inter phone
  • Electric and water consumption controls
  • Sound system remote control
  • Solar panels: you can monitor its functioning through internet and control the production and consumption of energy.
  • Security cameras and alarm.

All the features can be connected to the virtual home assistant (Amazon Alexa), yo be able to ask her “play jazz” or turn off all the lights and closing the shutters by saying “Alexa I am leaving”.

Incorporating smart technologies to your home:

  • Brings more comfort and well being to the house
  • Allows energy saving, time saving and money saving
  • Improves protection and security surveillance and control
  • Increases resale value as technology becomes luxury

By the other hand, there is always a concert about security and privacy in those systems. Companies are developing more robust security measures and more complex authentication protocols. It’s in their interest to protect their product as home automation is a fast growing marker. The progress will not go back, in the future all the houses will be smart.

The next step in home automation will be the total immersion in the Internet of Things (IoT), a network where objects are connected and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet. That means that smart homes will be able to learn about their owners and anticipate their needs.

Homes will be able to predict what music we want to hear and how much light we need, they will help us with home duties or automatically detect health or security issues.

IoT company Crestron is working on software that tracks people habits, to be able to automatically play the right music or create the correct light setup.

The computer-graphics company Nvidia is working on a smart robotic arm for the kitchen, to help with slicing and dicing veggies or cleanup.

Bathroom-fixture company Toto has experimented with urine-sampling toilets, while one company has filed patents for devices including a mirror that’s meant to monitor users’ health just by analyzing their skin.

We are not so far yet, but more and more people see smart-home technology as essential as electricity, refrigeration or air-conditioning.

Would you like to have a completely smart home? What are your thoughts?
